NOW A REAL DEBATE, ALMOST

NOW A REAL DEBATE, ALMOST

Rick Perry has now dropped out of the race for the GOP nomination.  All that is left to be done, and SC will do so, is for Santorum to drop out as well.  Thanks, for all the sermons guys, but it is time for the GOP to make a real decision, be moderate or be really tough from the right (without all the religion thrown in) to decide whom to run against Obama this year.

Said another way, we will have two men and an idiot to choose from as GOP voters in the primaries (probably after this Saturday’s primary in SC).

I for sure will be watching what now unfolds, intensely, very intensely.  HOPEFULLY the two men (forget the idiot) will stop the BS and get down to the nuances of their respective policy debates on the economy, defense spending, Iran (right now), entitlement reform and the other real issues to be decided in the coming general election.

No more “low blows” guys.  No more “vulture capitalist” snide remarks.  No more sound bites against one another for Dems to replay ad naseaum in the coming months.  Just good, sound policy differences so we can all within the GOP and conservative community make our decisions.

Thank you Governor Perry for a wise decision.  And for Senator Santorum, I hope you make the same one very quickly.

As for the idiot, Ron Paul, just keep it up until you really lose the primaries.  But if you even think about a third party option, I hope a predator drone finds you real fast!!!

IF it comes down to only Mitt and Newt, I will withdraw my full support for Mitt and await the final outcome, even if it takes going to the convention in August to make that final decision.

    Anson,

Hey, don’t be calling my man and “idiot.” I’ve been a Ron Paul admirer for years. I don’t agree with all he says, but most of it. For example, he wants to get rid of the FED. He wants to find out what’s going on behind those 12 foot tall solid oak doors. But one of the many benefits of doing this is to get rid of $1.7 trillion in debt that the Treasury “owes” the FED. You want to reduce debt, here’s a good start . . . thanks to Ron Paul.

I also agree, and I’m sure you disagree, with Dr. Paul that we need to stop being the policemen of the world. According to the “Department of Defense Base Structure Report, FY 2010 Baseline,” the U.S. has 662 bases in 38 foreign countries. (This is considerably less than the 900 bases in 130 countries that Paul touts in his speeches.) There are about 310,000 military personnel stationed overseas and un unknown number of civilian “contractors, but they are probably in the hundreds of thousands as well. And, of course, it’s the contractors who make out like bandits here. Take Iraq for instance. Somebody please. We have an unsustainable and unnecessary military footprint stepping on the world in my opinion and it creates more problems than it solves, like, say, 9/11.

Paul also wants to get rid of the tax code. We can all applaud that. Problem is, he’s suggesting tax credits for energy and education, but if you don’t have a tax code . . .

I generally agree with his positions on most of the other issues and think he passes the AuH2O test I posted recently. Of course, he doesn’t have a snowballs chance of getting elected. But he at least has called attention to some important issues other than abortion and gay marriage (yawn.)

As for Newt and Mitt, well, good luck. Newt is a hyperbolic, condesending, egomanic. Some called his 1994 “Contract with America,” (which helped the GOP get control of both houses of Congress) a failure. In a November 13, 2000 article by Edward H. Crane, president of the Cato Institute, he writes, “…the combined budgets of the 95 major programs that the Contract with America promised to eliminate have increased by 13%.” Reduce the size of government, my ass.

As for Mitt, well he’s pretty much out of touch with middle America. Plus he’s a vacillator and a panderer. And his time with Bain & Company vis a vis the employment issue may be his downfall. You know Obama is going to burn up millions of TV sets with ads reminding us of Mitt’s lack of concern for “Jobs.”

At the end of the day, It’s like Moose said, we don’t get the candidates who could really make a difference because they’re too smart to run. We’re stuck with the leftovers.

    Herb,

First of all he, Gingrich is the SMARTEST “hyperbolic, condesending, egomanic” of the whole bunch running. Just listen to his politicy pronouncements and you will see what I mean.

And they are all egomanics. What other kind of creature would run for President??? OH, I know, someone with lots of empathy, right. That is a reference to comments made and received “over there” in case you missed them!!

But be my guest Herb. Defend Ron Paul all you like. But when he loses the GOP nomination, PLEASE don’t call on him to run on a third party ticket. You would probably vote for him and we need all we can get to beat Obama at all costs!!!

And if you think Romney is out of touch, come with me to a Tea Party rally and see how out of touch Obama may be today. Na, forget the Tea Party. Just go talk to some normal Americans some of whom are at Tea Party rallies as well.

Well, I’m not so sure Newt is the smartest. I mean after all, Dr. Paul is a, you know, doctor. But my main objection to Gingrich is that he’s willing to pull the trigger on Iran. There go thousands more American lives and trillions more in debt. Plus he’s got a lot of baggage anyway. Bottom line, in my opinion it’s Newt who’s the idiot here.

And, no I will not call on Paul to run as an independent. He’s already said he won’t anyway. So that’s a non-issue.

That leaves us with Mitten. Well, if Newt is Newton, then Mitt ought to be Mitten, right? Anyway, I’m taking a wait and see position on him right now. He’s got some baggage too but I don’t know if it’s enough to bring him down. He reminds me a little of John Kerry in 2004.

And I have no allegiance to the Tea Party. I’m a registered independent and that’s the way I vote . . . if I vote. As to getting Obama out of office at all costs, that won’t play with me. I’ll make a judgement at the appropriate time of who I think will do the least harm. If that turns out to be Obama, then so be it.

  4. ansonburlingame Says:

    Herb,

I to am an independent but you can bet your bippie I will vote for sure. I may have to “hold my nose” but vote I will.

But if you now limit the choice to Gingrich, Romney or Obama, I KNOW who I will NOT vote for, period. But add Paul to that mix and I may well have to “go for my nose” in the voting booth next fall.

I also suggest that you have been reading to much liberal “stuff”. Newt is NOT calling for bombing Iran. But he is in favor of REALLY putting the clamps on them, economically, covertly (give all the Iranians cell phones!) and several other tactics to ratchet up the pressure on the Iranian government.

Now go read my blog on Iran to see what I mean by that last remark. But again, NEWT IS NOT CALLING FOR WAR with Iran, UNLESS THEY want to start one.
